Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT): Supporting Autistic Children in Aberdeen’s Ethnic Minority Communities

At Aberdeen Multicultural Centre, we are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of families across our diverse communities. As part of this mission, we are proud to offer Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) — a treatment that is showing promising benefits for autistic children and their families.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy involves breathing pure oxygen in a specially designed chamber where air pressure is increased to a safe level. This process helps the body absorb more oxygen, which supports natural healing, reduces inflammation, and improves overall wellbeing.

HBOT has been used worldwide for a variety of health conditions, and in recent years, many families and researchers have reported positive outcomes for children with autism.

How HBOT Can Benefit Children with Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects communication, behaviour, and social interaction. Every child’s experience is unique, but families often face common challenges such as sensory sensitivities, difficulties with focus, sleep issues, or anxiety.

Research and parental feedback suggest that HBOT may help:

  • Improve focus and attention by supporting better oxygen flow to the brain

  • Reduce inflammation that can impact brain and body health

  • Enhance sleep patterns, leading to calmer behaviour and better routines

  • Support speech and language development through improved brain function

  • Promote overall wellbeing for both children and their families

While HBOT is not a cure for autism, it can be a valuable complementary therapy that supports other educational, behavioural, and healthcare interventions.

Our Commitment to Aberdeen’s Ethnic Minority Families

We understand that families from ethnic minority backgrounds may face additional challenges in accessing healthcare and wellbeing services. Language barriers, cultural differences, and limited awareness of available therapies can create obstacles.

At Aberdeen Multicultural Centre, we are dedicated to making HBOT accessible, inclusive, and culturally sensitive. Our team will:

  • Provide clear information in multiple languages

  • Create a welcoming and supportive environment for families

  • Work closely with parents to understand each child’s needs

  • Offer HBOT sessions at affordable rates for our communities
